Andrew Schultz, PsyD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric health psychologist. He helps children and teens manage the emotional aspects of having a chronic illness.
Andrew explains health psychology as the integration of health care and the recognition that health and mental health are inseparable. As such, he helps children adjust to life with new medical diagnoses and teaches them coping skills to lessen anxiety. He also helps them make specific health changes to improve their medical conditions. While he works with young patients with a range of illnesses, he has a special clinical interest in helping children manage life with type 1 diabetes.
Andrew believes early intervention is key to helping children manage their mental health before small issues become bigger ones. He uses a patient-first approach to care, listening carefully to what his patients are really saying. He provides support and offers guidance so patients can identify for themselves what they need the most.
When not in the clinical setting, Andrew enjoys oil painting.
Physical health and mental health are inseparable and it’s vital to integrate the two.
