Arij Beshish, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric pulmonologist (lung and breathing expert) and sleep specialist. She’s also an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Dr. Beshish treats children with asthma and sleep-disordered breathing conditions as well as complex diseases requiring advanced breathing support. She performs procedures to make an opening in the neck for a breathing tube and also oversees mechanical ventilation for children who can’t breathe on their own.
Dr. Beshish treats babies born prematurely with incompletely developed lungs. Many require breathing support and might have bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), which can cause lung scarring and other complications.
Working with the UW Health neonatal intensive care team, Dr. Beshish determines the best form of breathing support for each child. She follows babies as they grow and develop, evaluating them for complications and guiding their transition to adult care.
In addition to clinical care, Dr. Beshish researches BPD and studies developmental changes and effective treatments in children with BPD.
Outside of work, Dr. Beshish enjoys creating three-dimensional cupcakes and cake designs, including popularly themed birthday cakes for her children.
Taking care of children is very special to me. It’s rewarding to see them get better after being critically ill and to comfort families of children with highly complex medical needs.
