Acerca de

Courtney Balentine, MD, MPH, FACS, is a UW Health surgeon. He’s also an associate professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Balentine cares for patients with thyroid disease, adrenal gland problems and other endocrine disorders, which affect hormone-producing glands.

Dr. Balentine diagnoses and treats goiter (enlarged thyroid) and thyroid cancers. He also treats hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Graves’ disease (an immune system disorder) and other disorders, including abdominal hernias (bulging from weakened tissues) that are caused by hormone imbalances. He provides minimally invasive thyroid surgery and other treatment options.

His specialties include caring for kidney transplant patients who develop hyperparathyroidism. This affects the parathyroid glands that regulate mineral levels. Related hormone imbalances can cause complications such as bone fractures. Dr. Balentine works with other specialists to deliver comprehensive care.

Dr. Balentine’s research includes studying abdominal hernias in older patients. He finds ways to avoid potential brain side-effects affecting cognition (thinking processes). He also evaluates minimally invasive and open surgeries to see which treatments deliver the safest, most effective results.

Outside of work, Dr. Balentine enjoys traveling with his wife and going for hikes and runs with their dogs.

It's very rewarding to see people get relief from troublesome symptoms and get better very quickly.
