David Plante, MD, PhD, is a sleep medicine doctor and the medical director of the Wisconsin Institute for Sleep and Consciousness at UW Health. Board certified in both psychiatry and sleep medicine, he treats patients who have sleep disorders including narcolepsy (falling asleep suddenly during the day), sleep apnea (when you stop breathing overnight), insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders. Dr. Plante treats also patients who have trouble with their sleep patterns, including sleep-related movement disorders such as restless leg syndrome. His specialty is understanding central nervous system disorders of hypersomnolence (excessive daytime sleepiness). Many of his patients suffer from this condition, and he enjoys learning more about the disorder by listening to their experiences. Dr. Plante advocates for his patients and understands the importance of discussing with them the risks and benefits of different treatment options. He learns about their medical history, sleep issues and their impact to help determine the most effective treatment. An associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Dr. Plante currently researches disorders of central hypersomnolence. In his free time, Dr. Plante enjoys coaching his children’s basketball teams. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing increased function in my patients. Through interventions and treatments, we can help them live a better life.
