Acerca de
James Stein, MD, is a UW Health cardiologist. He is also a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and leads a UW Health research program that conducts ultrasound research on blood vessels.
Dr. Stein provides care for people with heart disease and those who are at risk for heart disease. Dr. Stein regularly cares for young and middle-aged people who don’t yet have heart issues but who have risk factors for heart attack or stroke, as well as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and family history of heart disease.
Using a patient-centered approach to care, Dr. Stein partners with his patients to reduce their risk for heart disease and live longer, healthier lives. He believes that his patients are the experts on themselves, so he listens carefully to understand their symptoms and health goals. After discussing treatment options, he personalizes care to best meet their needs.
Outside of work, Dr. Stein enjoys cycling and traveling the world.
Living in a country where so many people die from heart disease, it really created a burning desire in me to help prevent that.

Dr. Stein’s research interests include ultrasound assessment of atherosclerosis, arterial injury and arterial function, as well as cardiovascular epidemiology and clinical trials in preventive cardiology. Specific interests include arterial wall tissue characterization using ultrasound, characterization of arterial injury in individuals who smoke tobacco or vape, and the effects of human immunodeficiency virus and its treatments on arterial disease.
