John Rice, MD, is a UW Health gastroenterologist who specializes in transplant medicine and an associate professor fn the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health where he also serves as the section chief. Dr. Rice treats a range of gastrointestinal (GI) or digestive issues. His clinical specialty is working with patients with liver conditions ranging from mild liver disorders to complex liver diseases such as cirrhosis (severe scarring) and hepatitis C. Dr. Rice also provides post-operative care for patients who have had organ transplantation and require long-term disease management. In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr. Rice serves on education committees for the gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship program and studies liver disease and alcohol-related liver disease outcomes. In his free time, Dr. Rice enjoys spending time with family and staying involved in his kids’ activities. He also enjoys golfing, traveling and a wide range of sports. I treat a lot of people who are very sick, but we have many good solutions and an amazing multispecialty team. It’s rewarding to help people get better.
