Karin Zuegge, MD, is a UW Health anesthesiologist and an associate professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She provides anesthesia care to patients before, during and after their surgical procedures. Dr. Zuegge has also served as the UW Health Medical Director of Sustainability since 2015. She started a perioperative green team in 2012 and began measuring solid waste from the OR as well as anesthetic gas waste. Dr. Zuegge tracked the cost savings from encouraging environmentally friendly practices and used those results to propose funding for the new role. Her efforts have resulted in a more than 70% reduction in annual carbon dioxide emissions and several national awards from Practice Greenhealth.
