Margarita German, MD

Margarita German, MD, is a UW Health transplant hepatologist (liver doctor). She’s also an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. German cares for patients before and after they’ve undergone a liver transplant. She also provides care for patients with all types of liver disease, including hepatitis A, B, and C, liver cancer and cirrhosis. She has a special clinical interest in alcohol-associated liver disease.

Dr. German founded a multidisciplinary alcohol-associated liver disease clinic, where she sees patients with alcohol use disorder and alcohol-associated liver disease. She works closely with other team members in the clinic, who include addiction medicine specialists, social workers and other hepatologists.

Dr. German’s current research focuses on outcomes for patients who are being treated for alcohol-associated liver disease.

Outside of work, Dr. German enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, salsa dancing, playing the piano and traveling.
