Matthew Churpek, MD, PhD, MPH, is a UW Health pulmonary (lung) and critical care doctor and an associate professor in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care within the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Churpek cares for people with critical illness, including those who need mechanical ventilation and other types of life support.

His areas of clinical interest include diagnosing and treating sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

With a PhD and a master’s degree in public health, Dr. Churpek is committed to improving health care. As co-leader of the UW Health ICU Data Science Lab, he uses machine-learning and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches to enhance early detection and treatment of critically ill patients. He has developed models for clinical deterioration, sepsis and acute kidney injury, which can be used in the electronic health record to improve patient care.

I entered the medical profession to help people in need and to use research methods as a way to improve how we care for people.
