Michael R. Lucey, MD

Acerca de

Michael Lucey, MD, is a UW Health hepatologist. He specializes in the diagnosis and care of people with serious liver disease, particularly those who need a liver transplant.

Dr. Lucey treats many forms of liver disease, including hepatitis, an inflammation caused by viral or autoimmune issues or too much medication. He also cares for patients with cirrhosis, which causes scar tissue on the liver. Cirrhosis is caused by drinking too much alcohol, a build-up of fat on the liver or other issues.

To determine the best treatment, Dr. Lucey and his team first determine why the patient’s liver is not functioning properly. He puts people at ease by explaining their illness and assuring them that his team will do their very best to help.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Lucey serves as a professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He researches alcoholic liver disease, viral hepatitis and patient care before and after liver transplantation.

Away from the hospital, Dr. Lucey enjoys spending time with family and being a grandfather.

What excites me most is finding new treatments for liver disease and helping patients return to an active life.
