About

Nicholas Schumacher, NP, is a UW Health nurse practitioner specializing in anesthesiology and cardiothoracic (heart, lung and chest) intensive care. He treats patients who require advanced care after surgery for complex or life-threatening conditions affecting the heart, lungs and chest.

As part of the critical care team, Nicholas works with cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, critical nursing staff and other specialists. They work together to manage post-surgical care for critically ill patients.

Nicholas treats patients following heart surgery, heart or lung transplants and other procedures. He also cares for patients with newly implanted mechanical circulatory support devices. His role includes communicating with care teams and evaluating and treating patients. He assesses their post-operative condition and interprets test results and other diagnostic information as they recover.

Nicholas takes time to discuss his patients’ changing conditions and treatment plans, addressing any questions or concerns their family and loved ones may have. Collaborating with other specialists, Nicholas adjusts treatment plans as needed for a safe and effective recovery.

I enjoy being part of a multidisciplinary care team providing comprehensive, evidence-based care for patients with highly complex medical conditions.
