The laboratory interprets diagnostic muscle, nerve and skin punch biopsies. It is staffed by two myologists/neurologists and one neuropathologist. These specialists provide complete diagnostic interpretation of muscle and nerve biopsies along with skin punch biopsy for epidermal nerve fiber density analysis. In addition, two full-time technologists offer outstanding services in histology, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy of muscle, nerve and skin punch biopsy tissues.
Muscle, nerve and skin punch biopsy specimens from outside hospitals or surgical facilities may be referred to the Muscle and Nerve Laboratory for processing, staining and interpretation. The required protocols/procedures for sending muscle, nerve and skin punch biopsy specimens are provided below.
