Welcoming the community to explore Carbone

Carbone Cancer Center is partnering with UW’s Science Expeditions to showcase the cutting-edge cancer research being done here in Madison, raise awareness of new cancer trends and prevention strategies and encourage kids to dream of careers in science with hands-on activities and lab tours.

This free event welcomes the community on Sunday, April 6, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Health Sciences Learning Center, 750 Highland Ave. Carbone’s activities tie into several campus-wide Saturday Sciences events as well. View the day's schedule

“As Wisconsin’s only comprehensive cancer center, we are proud to open our doors and offer a firsthand look at the life-saving work our scientists and health care providers are doing to reduce cancer’s burden for our loved ones,” said Dr. Christian Capitini, Carbone’s Acting Director

Carbone scientists will provide tours every 30 minutes of their lab facilities and explain their work in advancing life-saving medicine. Spark your creativity with more than 20 hands-on learning stations, enjoy Babcock ice cream and explore our large inflatable colon, lung and brain displays. The first 500 people will also receive a free thermal tote bag.

During the Open House, Dr. Capitini will lead a panel of experts in answering questions from the public about topics such as new cancer trends, prevention tips, efforts to reduce health disparities and the most promising areas of research on the horizon.

This panel spans several areas of expertise and includes:

This year’s event also will highlight the 10th anniversary of the Breast Cancer Research Advisory Network, a group of breast cancer survivors and co-survivors who provide patient and caregiver perspectives for researchers who are designing clinical trials, writing grant proposals and exploring areas of need for research. Those volunteers will join breast cancer researchers for a panel talk highlighting their highly successful partnership. Researchers include:
