Benjamin Gillespie, DO, is a UW Health rehabilitation medicine doctor who treats patients recovering from a disability or injury both in a clinical setting and the hospital. He's also a clinical associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Dr. Gillespie has a special interest in treating patients who have a traumatic brain injury from non-sports-related concussions or accidents. He also sees patients with amputations, brain tumors, non-traumatic brain injury and major trauma.
When Dr. Gillespie first meets a patient, he discusses their goals. He educates his patients on their condition. Then, he works with them to develop a timeline for rehabilitation. Dr. Gillespie is transparent about the timeline and what the patient can expect.
It is most rewarding when his patients return to the life they had prior to injury or disability. Dr. Gillespie’s goal is for patients to maintain the health they worked hard for in rehab. To achieve this, he listens carefully, includes his patients in decisions and puts the patient at the center of the care plan.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Gillespie enjoys fishing, traveling, playing hockey and spending time with his wife and children.
I approach every patient as though I'm seeing my own mother or father. If you approach the situation like you're treating a family member, then the decisions are easy.
