Carrie Thiessen, MD, is a UW Health transplant surgeon. She is also an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Surgery, Division of Transplantation.
Dr. Thiessen specializes in kidney and pancreas transplant surgeries. She evaluates end-stage kidney or pancreatic disease patients. Dr. Thiessen also treats patients with severe complications related to diabetes or chronic pancreatitis for kidney, pancreas or islet cell transplant, including performing total pancreatectomy auto islet transplant.
Dr. Thiessen educates her patients on the risks and benefits of transplant surgery. She explains the transplant process and what to expect post-surgery. Listening to her patients’ concerns, questions and fears is important to Dr. Thiessen. This enables her to tailor the care plan to their unique needs.
As a trained bioethicist, Dr. Thiessen studies the ethical issues surrounding organ transplantation. Dr. Thiessen also conducts research to identify strategies to increase living kidney donation.
