Deanna Jewell, DO, is a UW Health Kids rehabilitation medicine doctor and associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Jewell treats infants, children and adolescents with nerve and muscular disorders such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and spasticity (rigid muscles). Her goal is to improve their quality of life by helping them move better, speak better and increase their ability to learn and function. Dr. Jewell has a special clinical interest in working with patients with amputation and congenital (present at birth) limb deficiencies. She assesses whether a prosthetic device, adaptive tool or special therapy will help them function better and helps get them fitted for adaptive sports equipment. Dr. Jewell uses a family-focused approach to care. She enjoys getting to know her patients’ hobbies and goals and what makes them happy. She then creates personalized care plans designed to meet each child’s needs. In addition to her clinical and teaching roles, Dr. Jewell researches new medications that may help children with nerve and muscular disorders move better. During her free time, Dr. Jewell enjoys exercising and spending time with family. My hope for each child is that we can help them function better and live a happy, productive life.
