Elizabeth Misch, MD, is a UW Health infectious disease doctor. She’s also an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Misch diagnoses and treats patients with complex, challenging illnesses. These include tuberculosis, leprosy, neglected tropical diseases and other mycobacterial infections (illnesses caused by certain germs). Dr. Misch also cares for people with weakened immune systems. Working as a detective of sorts, Dr. Misch often helps other doctors determine the best ways to treat people with fever and unexplained medical symptoms. She serves as a state expert in the study and treatment of tuberculosis. To provide effective care, Dr. Misch believes it’s important to get to know each patient. She examines their medical and surgical history and asks about their life, hobbies and travels. She listens closely to discover potential clues that might explain the cause of their infection. She performs testing and recommends medicines and potential therapies. Together, Dr. Misch and her patients create a care plan to treat and manage the disease. In addition, Dr. Misch conducts clinical research to improve care for patients who have mycobacterial infections. I work to do my best for every patient — to find the best possible treatments to cure or manage their infections.
