Majid Afshar, MD, is a UW Health critical care doctor and an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health where he is also one of the lead scientists in the data science lab.
Dr. Afshar provides advanced care for patients who are critically ill with life-threatening infections (sepsis), acute respiratory failure, alcohol-related disorders and other conditions.
Dr. Afshar leads a research lab funded by the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Afshar and his colleagues use clinical health informatics, computer engineering and data science to research complex medical issues that impact the human body. They also study the use of natural language processing (a type of artificial intelligence) in health care. Their goal is to help doctors use their expertise to diagnose diseases sooner and offer better treatment for people with critical illness and substance misuse.
During his free time, Dr. Afshar enjoys tennis, wine and hiking.
We use clinical information and data science to unravel complex mysteries about the human body and diagnose and treat patients sooner.
