About
Brett Michelotti, MD, is a UW Health plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He is board certified in plastic surgery and has added qualifications in hand and microvascular surgery. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Dr. Michelotti treats facial and upper body trauma, hand and wrist injuries, nerve disorders, arthritic joint injuries, birth defects, cancer, amputated fingers and limbs and other conditions. His specialties include microvascular surgery and reconstructive repair of complex injuries. He also provides mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery.
His surgical expertise includes tissue transfers from one part of the body to another to restore appearance and function. Dr. Michelotti also performs nerve decompression and peripheral nerve surgery.
Dr. Michelotti has advanced orthopedic expertise in performing challenging arm, elbow and hand procedures.
Dr. Michelotti helps patients stay fully informed and comfortable with their decisions and care. He is also involved in research that focuses on enhancing post-surgical outcomes.
In his free time, Dr. Michelotti enjoys mountain biking and cycling around the Madison area.

Research & publications
Dr. Michelotti’s research focuses on patient reported outcome measures following plastic surgery and hand and upper extremity surgery procedures. Recent publications have focused on limiting opioid prescribing following surgery and reducing or eliminating post-amputation pain. Ongoing projects include a clinical trial examining the effect of nerve surgery performed concurrently with breast reconstruction, a global functional assessment with patient reported outcomes following nerve transfer surgery in amputees and an evaluation of social functioning in patients who have undergone facial skin cancer removal and reconstruction.
