Total disc replacement: Preserve your spinal motion

If you've been suffering from chronic pain related to a damaged or degenerated disc and you’re looking for an alternative to spinal fusion surgery, UW Health offers another option in northern Illinois for the neck an lower back – total disc replacement (TDR) surgery.

The goal of total disc replacement (TDR) surgery is to maintain your spine's natural movement and provide lasting pain relief by replacing a damaged or degenerated disc with an artificial disc. Compared to spinal fusion, TDR is a minimally invasive procedure that provides an increased range of motion and flexibility. UW Health is one of few health care organizations in northern Illinois offering TDR surgery for both the neck and lower back.

The spine consists of many bones, known as vertebrae, that protect the spinal cord and provide stability for the head and upper body. Flexible discs are located between these vertebrae, acting as “shock absorbers” and facilitating motion. Changes in the spine due to aging, trauma, or inactivity can lead to reduced mobility and instability, often causing pain.

Total disc replacement surgery is a minimally invasive spinal surgery that is used to treat pain caused by deteriorating and damaged discs in the spine. During TDR surgery, the damaged disc is removed and replaced by an artificial implant, restoring the spine's natural structure, height and function.

TDR alleviates pain caused by degenerated spinal discs in both the cervical and lumbar spine, while preserving motion in the affected area and reducing degeneration in adjacent discs, allowing patients to return to their active lifestyle.

A surgical alternative to spinal fusion

There are multiple options for treating degenerated and damaged discs, and your provider will discuss the appropriate options for you based on your condition.

Total disc replacement can preserve spinal motion in both the neck and lower back, compared to traditional spinal fusion which permanently eliminates movement between the discs. This allows many patients to regain full function of the spine and remain active after having surgery.

Benefits of total disc replacement

Total disc replacement is a minimally invasive surgery, which offers several benefits compared to traditional spinal fusion:

  • Enhanced range of motion and flexibility

  • Faster recovery

  • Less pain

  • Lower risk of post-surgical complications

  • Slower degeneration of adjacent discs

TDR also often lowers the need for re-operations and facilitates a quicker recovery, allowing patients to return to normal activities sooner than with traditional fusion surgery.
